Description
The research project will take a historical look at crime trends and demographic changes in Mecklenburg County to better understand the context of current discussions around criminal offending in the local community. The aim is to provide accurate statistical analysis of crime trends, accounting for changes in Mecklenburg’s population over time, to present a data-informed narrative that tells the story of crime and Mecklenburg County's changing demographics over the past several decades and explain the nature of criminal offending in this community. By providing empirically sound research on crime trends in our community CJS will be able to provide relevant stakeholders and the community at-large with information to better understand and implement changes around our local justice system. Research on the history of crime in Mecklenburg County, in relationship to population and demographic changes, will provide community members with the knowledge and ability to seek necessary change based on data and empirical evidence. When possible, the voices of those directly impacted by the local criminal justice system will be lifted to inform how policy and practice change can improve our local criminal justice system. It is only through transparency and open dialogue with impacted members of our community that we can effectuate meaningful change. Funding for this project will benefit the greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg community by providing much-needed understanding around the nature and trends of criminal offending in Mecklenburg County. In collaboration with a vendor, the crime trend study will leverage criminal justice data from the data warehouse that sits within CJS and contains information on arrests, jail, pretrial risk assessment, and court case data. The Project is expected to take approximately one year to complete
